Alake of Egbaland

His Royal Majesty

His Royal Majesty, King Dr. Aremu Michael Adedotun Gbadebo, the Okukenu IV, was born on 14 September 1943 into the Laarun Ruling House. His birth, coinciding with the Centenary Celebration of Christianity in Egbaland, was a unique event.

This faith and religion carved out a niche for Egbaland and influenced the young prince's upbringing. He, too, had the fruits of good Western education, which the Egbas had an edge in Nigeria due to their early exposure to Christianity. King Gbadebo's lineage is not just a family tree but a rich tapestry of history and tradition that commands awe and reverence.

He is a grandson of the sixth Alake of Egbaland, King Gbadebo, who ruled from 1898 to 1920, and is a nephew of King Gbadebo II. His great-grandfather was Okukenu, the first Alake of Egbaland. Through Okukenu, Gbadebo's lineage traces back to Laarun, an Alake of Egbaland who ruled in the early 1700s. Laarun is Gbadebo's 5th-great-grandfather, a testament to the enduring legacy of his family.

King Gbadebo's academic journey is not just a testament to his dedication but a source of inspiration for many. He attended the Baptist Boys' High School in Abeokuta and Ibadan Grammar School, then went on to the prestigious University of Ibadan in 1965, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. His pursuit of knowledge didn't end there. In 1969, he joined the army and furthered his education at the Command and Staff College, Jaji, from September 1978 to August 1979. His academic prowess and military training culminated in his role as a Principal Staff Officer to Major General Tunde Idiagbon, the Chief of Staff at the Supreme Headquarters, Dodan Barracks, from January 1984 to September 1985. He retired from the army as a Colonel, a journey that commands respect and admiration.

Today, King Michael Aremu Adedotun Gbadebo is on the throne of his forefathers. A devout Christian, a dedicated man, a devoted public servant, and a visionary man. Long live the King!
